Outside the Dox: Food & Farming
More Than Corn is teaming up with Hoodox, PIFF, and the Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market to present Outside the Dox: Full Hand Farm!
Outside the Dox: Hoosier Documentary Discussions is a new, virtual event from Hoodox that expands the focus beyond the film - it's a space for community, conversation, and action. Participants watch a selected documentary in advance, then father for a live event featuring in-depth discussions with filmmakers, subject-matter experts, and fellow community members.
This month's featured documentary is Full Hand Farm: A More Than Corn Story. The film will be streaming for FREE at hoodox.tv from May 19th to May 24th, and Outside the Dox itself will take place from 7:00-8:00pm ET on Wednesday, May 21st. We'll have a Q&A session with Hoosier food and farming experts.
Virtual Q&A guests include:
Genesis McKiernan-Allen, farmer and documentary subject
Rocky Walls, director
Barbara Wilder, market manager, Broad Ripple Farmers Market
Porchea McGuire, executive director, Partners IN Food and Farming
Eating local becomes more than just a trend in a docuseries that tells the stories of real Hoosier farmers who plan, build, plant, grow, nurture, harvest and prove once and for all - there is way more than corn in Indiana.
Full Hand Farm:
A More Than Corn Story
Husband-and-wife farmers Genesis and Eli share their journey of growing delicious, local food in Noblesville, Indiana. This film dives into the challenges, triumphs, and hard work involved in starting and operating a produce farm in the Midwest.
As they grow crops year-round, Full Hand Farm embraces all four of Indiana's seasons, highlighting the adaptability and ingenuity required to sustain their mission: bringing fresh produce to their community.
Nightfall Farm:
A More Than Corn Story
What’s it take to make a living - and a life - farming today? Follow along with husband-and-wife farmers Nate and Liz Brownlee as they work to run Nightfall Farm, a sustainable livestock farm in Crothersville, Indiana. While the farmers know how to raise and care for sheep, turkeys, chickens, and pigs, making difficult business decisions is a whole different animal.
Although Liz’s parents were ultimately unsuccessful in their farming ventures on the very same land, Nate and Liz believe new methods, hard work, and a good sense of humor will help them reach their goals.
Soul Food Project:
A More Than Corn Story
Spend a year with urban farm Soul Food Project as they push the limits to find out if there’s such a thing as growing too much too fast.
Featuring Danielle Guerin, a Hoosier and business graduate-turned-farmer whose passion brought Soul Food Project to life. Guerin not only fights local food insecurity, but also invites volunteers and staff to reap the mental health benefits of farming. However, with all the challenges of running a successful farming operation, Danielle must also work to maintain her own mental health.
Hawkins Family Farm:
A More Than Corn Story
Hawkins Family Farm: A More Than Corn Story is a heartfelt exploration of family, community, and the deep connection between land and legacy, featuring father and son duo Jeff and Zach Hawkins of Hawkins Family Farm in North Manchester, Indiana.
Following a sudden decision to leave college and return to the family farm full-time, Zach Hawkins takes over the management of the gardens while his father, Jeff, narrows his focus on the livestock. While the farm thrives under this welcome family dynamic, Jeff grapples with his own legacy and his desire to be a “good ancestor,” determined that his contributions to the land will not only ensure his family’s success but also honor the earth and its inhabitants for years to come.
